When it comes to racing games, you simply need to have a wheel. Without it, I think you’re missing out on the full experience and enjoyment of the game.

I own an Xbox 360, and one of the biggest problems with this system is the lack of support for racing games. There are so little options for Xbox 360 steering wheels that it’s actually somewhat frustrating. Even Microsoft themselves have discontinued their own racing wheels. Worst of all, because of the lack of support by Microsoft themselves, there isn’t a lot of places to get the proper information on the various types of wheels and accessories. That’s why I wanted to start one myself.

I want others to enjoy the thrill of racing like I do. It’s the added involvement that provides extreme realism when using a wheel and pedal that makes games like Dirt 3 or Forza 3 so awesome. It’s the ability to have full control over your car and just do things you would never dare to do in real life while still feeling that the experience is real.

Forza 3

I’ve compiled a list of wheels that Xbox 360 supports and gave an in-depth analysis of each. I list pros and cons and suggest certain accessories to go with the wheels. As you can see above, that list shows what I believe to be the best wheels for the Xbox 360. There isn’t a lot of options at the moment, but a new set of wheels are coming out in October!

My reviews are broken down into four major categories: design, feel, pedals, and shifters.

  • The design is obviously how the wheel looks. I mention if it’s made of high quality or just simple plastic. I talk about its weight and thickness so you can get the best understanding of what would suit you best.
  • The feel represents various aspects like force feedback, precision, calibration, etc. Personally, I always have to have force feedbacks so wheels with this aspect generally get a huge boost. Force feedback not only gives you the feeling that you are playing the game, but it will improve your driving abilities since it gives you a better “feel” for your car. Precision is just how well the wheel and game react to one another. Calibration represents how well aligned the wheel is. I’ve had experiences where the wheel would always be calibrated slightly to the left or right, which got annoying.
  • Pedals are the accelerators and brakes that may or may not come with the wheel. I talk about its comfort and reaction. These are pretty basic. Also, whenever it applies, I mention the clutch.
  • Shifters are what you use to change gears. There are various types: paddle shifters, sequential shifters, and H-shifter. The paddle shifters are just these “paddles” behind the wheels that you use to change gears. They aren’t very realistic but I guess they get the job done. I personally prefer the sequential shifter, which is a separate stick shift that you can move up/down to change gears. My favorite, though, is the H-shifter, which is your standard 6-gear + reverse. It allows you to choose specific gears rather than just moving in sequential order. Not all games support the H-shifter though.

Finally, I might mention a fifth category called “Other”. It’s anything else that you may want to know about the wheel.

With this knowledge, you will just find yourself knowing what you want. You’ll have the perfect wheel and can enjoy your racing games like never before.
